A Mega Time in Lincolnshire
Geocaching UK Mega 2021
I made it to Lincolnshire!
A fortnight off work consisted of a week exploring North Yorkshire (Spurn Lighthouse, Scarborough, Pickering and Whitby)... A trip on the North York Moors Railway (including a stop at Goathland for a virtual cache)... pubs and cafes and a fabulous restaurant "The Magpie" which served truly the best fish pie I have ever had, ruined gothic abbeys and harbour walls with virtuals and earthcaches.
Late in the week I voyaged to Sheffield and explorer all the tram stops (an all day tram pass costs £4.40). The tram network is amazing with its up and down on the hills, not what I was expecting. A few days later I was in Hathersage in the Peak District caching of course, mountain biking on Stanage Edge and exploring the virtuals and physicals and earthcaches around Castleton.
Then it was on to Lincolnshire... first point of call was a CITO (Cache In Trash Out) event at Cleethorpes, after which I checked into my Bed & Breakfast situated five minutes from the Lincolnshire Show Ground, home for the week for the UK Mega, a festival of Geocaching. The festival included a Kite Flying day at Skegness (so I've now completed 5 beach locations in a fortnight). I returned and got on my bike for a 4-hour cycle round a circuit to collect several dozen caches set by the Lincolnshire Mega organisers.
At the Mega I met up with fellow cacher friend Omiwahn and hooked up with a number of new friends including BabsBaby who took me under her wing when we explorer Lincoln's city trads, virtuals and earthcaches, multitasking with three Adventure labs! I really didn't cope with multitasking between all the finds so I really must thank Barbara for looking after me. Despite the dire weather forecasts for the week, we had sunshine most of the time, except for an occasional show which didn't dampen out plans.
Mega day itself (7 Aug 2021) saw several thousand people visit. There was a hall of traders, a trackable exchange table, representatives from Mega 2022 (West Midlands) , Mega 2023 (Milton Keynes), and The Podcache Show. We had a flyby by the Red Arrows and some interesting Lab Caches to discover on site. And the evening entertainments included some decent beer too. Can't go wrong with a Mega and a Pub!
