Over the Berlin Wall

Virtual Geocaching on Berlin

It's October 2020 - I had booked a trip to Berlin earlier in the year but as we all know, lockdown prevented any movement and I was forced to reschedule the trip for later in the year. As mid-October loomed I was still unsure whether, a) we could travel to Germany, and b) whether such a trip would result in a quarantine either their or back on our return. As it was, the door was still open for us to travel.

We flew in to Tegel Airport, a practically deserted airport which was within weeks of being permanently closed. A mask-wearing trip on the U-bahn (with very few people on the trains) and soon we were in Alexanderplatz, once a key point in the former East Berlin.

Berlin has many Virtual Caches and between museum visits (again wearing masks everywhere) I was able to grab a good handful of Virtuals, including one at the Brandenburg Tor, Checkpoint Charlie, the East Side Gallery (over 1km of wall still standing), the communist-built TV tower with restaurant (which cost me an arm feeding two people) and several around Alexanderplatz.

I shall return when things are safer. Thanks Berlin.
