London Calling
Geocaching in London, Wombles at Wimbledon, and a Mega Event at Westminster
London Calling... the title of an album and song by The Clash, based upon a wartime tagline of the BBC as it broadcast overseas. But it was also the name of a fabulous geocaching festival in London organised by London geocachers, the first ever geocaching mega event in the capital.
I tool the train up and dropped off my bags at a fairly decent but not too expensive hotel in Bayswater before heading to St.Martin's-in-the-field at Trafalgar Square to catch a side event. The following morning I took the tube to Waterloo and met up with Omiwahn after which we ventured towards Westminster collecting some of Lisboa_Bruno's brilliant games-console-based puzzles, several adventure labs, and a few other bits and pieces before arriving at Westminster Central Methodist Hall for the main event.
Afterwards we headed towards Soho, a few drinks in a pub on the Thames and a few more cache finds, each time surrounded by other geocachers. In the evening we headed to a community celebration event for two decades of geocaching, after which I headed out in the dark for a few more caches at night.
On the Sunday morning I took the tube towards Wimbledon for the final side-event, a CITO (Cache In Trash Out) - litter picking on Wimbledon common. Check the video for the full story.
I had a thoroughly great adventure and would like to thank the dozens of geocachers without whom my weekend would not have been quite the same.
